Marine Automation Prototype

Status: archived · Published May 1, 2022

This is one of the projects I can only describe carefully because it was done under NDA. The short version is that I worked on a marine automation prototype involving embedded electronics, PLC programming, sensors, CAN/NMEA communication, and operator-facing control logic.

What made the project interesting was not one isolated technology, but the amount of things that had to work together. There were physical sensors, industrial control logic, embedded devices, calibration details, communication buses, and a real environment where assumptions from the desk do not always survive contact with the hardware.

My role was very hands-on: understand what each subsystem was doing, find where things were breaking, and make the whole system behave more predictably. In this kind of work, debugging is rarely clean. A problem can be electrical, mechanical, software-related, calibration-related, or simply a misunderstanding between two systems that were never very friendly to each other.

I include this project because it represents an important part of my engineering work: mixed hardware/software integration under real constraints. I cannot publish schematics or client details, but I can say that it involved the kind of practical problem solving I enjoy most: connecting systems, testing assumptions, and making a prototype actually work.
