xLiDAR - Open-source LiDAR Concept
xLiDAR is one of those projects that started from a simple curiosity: how far can you go with affordable distance sensors if you arrange them in a more useful way?
The concept was based around VL53L0X ranging sensors, with the idea of building a low-cost open-source LiDAR-style system for robotics and sensing experiments. It was not meant to compete with serious industrial scanning hardware. It was more about exploring what could be built from accessible components and a bit of clever design.
I like this kind of project because it sits between electronics, robotics, and experimentation. You have to think about sensor placement, field of view, sampling, noise, timing, and how the data could actually be useful to a small robot or interactive system.
xLiDAR is best treated as a concept project rather than a finished product, but it fits the way I often work: take a component, push it a bit beyond the obvious use case, and see whether it can become a practical tool.
